Watch Serial Number Lookup
Michael Kors watches are made by Fossil Group under licence, and the most useful number on them is the MK model number on the case back. This guide explains where it is, how it differs from the other numbers engraved there, what a lookup can and can't tell you, and how to check a Michael Kors watch before you buy it secondhand.
Watch checks & theft reports
A database check is not proof of authenticity or ownership.
Turn the watch over. The case back carries the model number, which starts with MK (or MKT on Michael Kors Access smartwatches) followed by four digits. Most case backs also carry a second number that the manufacturer uses as a serial or production code, plus material and water-resistance markings. The box label, swing tag and receipt usually repeat the model number.
The MK model number identifies the design: case size, colour, movement type, strap width and battery. That's what you need for replacement straps, batteries and parts, and for checking that a listing describes the watch correctly. Neither Michael Kors nor Fossil Group publishes a serial or date-code decoder, so the case-back numbers won't tell you a production date or where the watch was originally sold.
No. Michael Kors watches are widely counterfeited, and fakes often carry real MK numbers. Search the MK number and compare the official product images with the watch in your hand: dial layout, logo, crown, case colour, bracelet and clasp should all match. Any mismatch is a strong warning sign.
Check the case back, between the lugs, the rehaut, the movement, the warranty card and the original box or papers. Locations vary by brand β see the brand guides below.
Most brands also stamp a separate reference or model number. Together, the two numbers identify the exact watch far better than either alone.
Run the serial number through our stolen-watch database to check whether matching watch information has been reported stolen.
A match or a clean result is one data point, not a verdict β compare the watch's details carefully either way.
For a significant purchase, pair your search with authentication from the manufacturer, an authorized dealer or an independent watch specialist.
Michael Kors watches are designed, manufactured and distributed by Fossil Group under a licence that was extended in 2025 to run through 2027. Service, batteries and warranty claims therefore go through Fossil Group's network rather than through Michael Kors stores. Most models use quartz movements, and Michael Kors Access smartwatches carry MKT model numbers.
| Marking | Example | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Model number | MK + four digits | The exact design: size, colour, movement and strap |
| Smartwatch model number | MKT + four digits | A Michael Kors Access smartwatch |
| Second number | Varies | Manufacturer serial or production code; no public decoder |
| Water resistance | e.g. 5 ATM, 10 ATM | How much water exposure the watch is rated for |
| Material | e.g. stainless steel back | Case back material |
Start from the MK number on the case back and find the official product images for it. A genuine watch matches its model number in every visible detail; most fakes give themselves away on several points at once.
Fashion watches are often taken in burglaries and shop thefts precisely because they're easy to resell online, and a stolen watch can be recovered from whoever ends up holding it. A check before you pay protects you, and keeping the listing, the seller's details and proof of payment gives you a record if anything goes wrong.
The serial number is what lets a stolen Michael Kors be identified later, so the most useful thing you can do is get it on record quickly and in as many places as possible.
On the case back. The MK (or MKT) model number is the main identifier, and most case backs carry a second manufacturer number used as a serial or production code.
It's the model number. It identifies the exact design, including case size, colour, movement and strap, and it's what you need for parts, straps and batteries.
There's no public Michael Kors or Fossil serial lookup. You can search the MK model number to confirm the design, and check the case-back numbers against stolen and lost watch records on StolenWatchX.
Not from a public decoder. The receipt or the date on the warranty booklet is the reliable date, and Fossil Group customer service may be able to help.
Fossil Group designs, manufactures and distributes them under licence, so warranty claims and servicing go through Fossil Group's network.
Search the MK number on the case back and compare the official photos with the watch: logo, dial, subdials, crown, case colour, bracelet and clasp should all match. Working chronograph subdials and solid build quality are good signs.
Note the numbers on the case back from the watch itself or a clear photo and search them on StolenWatchX before you pay.
Report it to the police, find the MK number and any other case-back numbers from your receipt, box or photos, tell your insurer, and register the watch as stolen on StolenWatchX.
