Brand and serial number are required for verification

How to Search Watches by Serial Number

A watch serial number search is one of the fastest due diligence steps before buying a pre-owned luxury watch. Use the exact brand and serial number shown on the watch, then compare the result with the seller's documents and photos.

  1. 1Find the serial number on the watch case, paperwork, service documents, or warranty card.
  2. 2Select the brand and enter the serial number exactly as shown, including letters where present.
  3. 3Run the serial number lookup for watches before payment, shipping, or meeting the seller.
  4. 4Keep the verification result with invoices, seller messages, and identity checks for your records.

Where to Find Watch Serial Numbers

Serial number placement varies by brand, model, and production period. If the number is hidden by a bracelet or caseback, ask a qualified watchmaker or dealer to inspect it.

Rolex

Older Rolex watches often show the serial number between the lugs at 6 o'clock after the bracelet is removed. Many modern Rolex watches also engrave it on the inner rehaut.

Omega

Omega serial numbers are commonly engraved on the caseback, on a lug, or on the movement, depending on the reference and age.

Cartier

Cartier serial numbers are usually engraved on the caseback, often near the model, metal, or reference markings.

Patek Philippe

Patek Philippe watches can have separate case and movement numbers. These may be inside the caseback, on the movement, or documented on archive and service papers.

Audemars Piguet

Audemars Piguet serial or case numbers are typically on the caseback or inside the case, with exact placement varying across Royal Oak, Offshore, and other collections.

What a Serial Number Can and Cannot Prove

Can help prove

  • Whether a matching stolen, lost, or flagged record appears in the database.
  • Whether the number shown by the seller is consistent across photos, papers, and invoices.
  • That you performed documented buyer due diligence before completing the transaction.

Cannot prove alone

  • That the watch is authentic, unmodified, or mechanically correct.
  • That the seller owns the watch or has authority to sell it.
  • That no theft report exists in a source outside the searched database.

Buyer Checklist

  • Search the serial number before sending money.
  • Match the serial number against the watch, warranty card, invoice, and service records.
  • Ask for clear photos of the caseback, lugs, dial, movement if accessible, and paperwork.
  • Verify seller identity and avoid rushed, cash-only, or below-market deals.
  • Use a secure payment method and keep a written trail.
