Fake Rolex Datejust vs Real: How to Spot One

With dozens of dials, bezels and metals, the Datejust is easy for counterfeiters to imitate and hard for buyers to memorise. The trick is to check the watch against its own reference number — most fakes get one detail of the combination wrong.

8 checks for a Datejust

  1. 1

The fluted bezel is always gold

A Datejust fluted bezel is made of gold — white gold on steel 'white Rolesor' models, whose reference ends in 4 (126334, 126234, 116234). A fluted bezel on a reference ending in 0 (all-steel, e.g. 126300 or 126200) doesn't exist: those come with a smooth bezel.

  2. 2

    Read the reference digits

The fifth digit is the bezel (0 smooth, 3 fluted) and the last digit the metal (0 steel, 3 yellow Rolesor, 4 white Rolesor). If the watch in front of you doesn't match its engraved reference, something has been changed or faked.

  3. 3

    Cyclops magnification

The cyclops magnifies the date 2.5×, so the numbers fill the lens and sit centred. A small date floating in the window is the classic fake Datejust giveaway.

  4. 4

    Size: 36 or 41 mm

Datejust 41 (1263xx) and Datejust 36 (1262xx, 1162xx) have different proportions. Measure the case without the crown; a 'Datejust 41' that measures 40 mm, or a mix of 36 mm dial with a 41 mm case, is wrong.

  5. 5

    Jubilee bracelet and hidden clasp

Modern Jubilee bracelets use a concealed Crownclasp — closed, it's almost invisible. Links should be tight and evenly finished, with no rattle. A visible, flimsy clasp on a modern Jubilee is suspect.

  6. 6

    Dial exists for that reference

Every dial — Wimbledon, palm motif, fluted motif, diamond markers — was made only for certain references and metals. Compare against the Rolex catalogue or dealer photos of the exact reference. Fakes often pair a dial with the wrong metal or size.

  7. 7

    Date change

Set the time past midnight: the date should jump quickly and sit straight. A date that rolls slowly through the evening points to a non-Rolex movement.

  8. 8

    Dial printing at 6 o'clock

Check 'SWISS MADE' and the crown at 6 o'clock against official photos of the exact reference and year. Current dials place a small crown between 'SWISS' and 'MADE'; older ones don't, so the detail must match the watch's age.

These checks catch most fakes, but the best counterfeits pass a visual inspection. Only a Rolex service centre or authorised dealer can confirm a watch is genuine. StolenWatch is not affiliated with Rolex.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Is a stainless steel Datejust with a fluted bezel fake?

If the bezel is fluted, it should be white or yellow gold, and the reference should end in 4 (white Rolesor) or 3 (yellow Rolesor). An 'all-steel' Datejust with a fluted bezel, or a fluted bezel on a reference ending in 0, is a red flag.

What is the most common fake Datejust tell?

Weak cyclops magnification — the date looks small inside the lens — followed by a combination of dial, bezel and metal that Rolex never made for that reference.

Does a Datejust have a see-through case back?

No. Datejust case backs are solid and plain. A display back showing the movement means the watch, or at least its case back, isn't genuine Rolex.
