Fake Rolex GMT-Master II vs Real: How to Tell

Pepsi, Batman and Root Beer GMT-Masters are among the most counterfeited Rolex models. Two features are hard to fake well: the one-piece two-colour ceramic bezel and the independently jumping hour hand.

7 checks for a GMT-Master II

  1. 1

Two colours, one piece of ceramic

On the Batman, Pepsi, Root Beer and Sprite, the two colours are made in a single piece of Cerachrom with a clean, sharp boundary — no seam, gap or colour bleed. Two separate pieces, a visible join or a fuzzy colour transition are red flags.

  2. 2

    Bezel: 24 clicks, both ways

The GMT-Master II bezel turns in both directions in 24 clicks — one per hour — and should stop precisely on each hour mark.

  3. 3

The hour hand jumps on its own

Pull the crown to the first setting position: the local hour hand should jump forward or back in one-hour steps while the watch keeps running and the GMT hand stays put. Fakes often move the GMT hand instead, or stop the seconds hand.

  4. 4

    Left-hand Sprite

The 126720VTNR has its crown and date on the left (9 o'clock side). A 'Sprite' with the crown on the right, or the date on the right, is fake.

  5. 5

    Dial and text by reference

Compare the dial with official photos of the exact reference. For example, the 116710LN has 'GMT-MASTER II' printed in green. Wrong colours, fonts or line breaks are common slips.

  6. 6

    Cyclops and date

The date should fill the 2.5× cyclops and change cleanly at midnight local time.

  7. 7

    Movement generation

The 126710 series uses calibre 3285 with about 70 hours of reserve; the 116710 uses calibre 3186 with about 48. A watchmaker opening the case should find the right calibre for the reference.

These checks catch most fakes, but the best counterfeits pass a visual inspection. Only a Rolex service centre or authorised dealer can confirm a watch is genuine. StolenWatch is not affiliated with Rolex.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How do I spot a fake Pepsi or Batman Rolex?

Look at the bezel: the two colours must be one piece of ceramic with a crisp, seamless boundary, and it should click 24 times per turn in both directions. Then check the local hour hand jumps independently in one-hour steps.

Does a real GMT-Master II's bezel turn both ways?

Yes. Unlike the Submariner's one-way dive bezel, the GMT-Master II bezel is bidirectional, with 24 clicks — one per hour.

Is a left-handed GMT-Master II real?

Yes — the 126720VTNR 'Sprite' (2022) has the crown and date on the left. That's the only left-handed GMT-Master II, so check the reference matches.
